Fancy Fabrics

My mother and I both loved antique dolls.  We were especially fond of our french fashion dolls of the 1870's.  Consequently, my mother bought lots of fabrics that were vintage, of silk and other fibers, suitable for dressing our dolls.  Every once in a while I'd say something like, "Have you got anything in lavendar?  I want to sew a lavendar dress."  If I was content to wait long enough, most of the time she'd come up with a couple pieces of fabric I could choose between.  I made a number of dresses for my dolls, but my mother never finished anything for hers.  I'm not sure she even tried.  I think she liked the hunt for the fabrics more than she did the sewing of the dresses.  Now I have all these wonderful fabrics for myself, but there are just so many of them!  My daughter keeps asking me how many dresses I'm planning on sewing.  I have to agree, it could quickly become a stash that gets out of control.  So this evening, while watching "The Voice," I measured and cut fabric.  I figure one yard is plenty of fabric for a dress for a 12-inch doll, so I'm only keeping a yard of each one and I'm going to sell the rest on Etsy.  I have no idea of fiber content or age.  Some yardage is narrow, 36 inches, so I know it's older.  But all of it should be appropriate for sewing into elegant doll dresses.  I just have to decide how much to sell it for.

Busy Weekend

This is one of those busy weekends, the kind you have to go back to work to recover from.  It started out with taking off work early on Friday to go watch the Little Guy.  Of course, everyone knows that's my favorite thing to do.  I just adore that little guy.  He does such funny things.  His funny thing this week was punching a button on a monster truck he has, like it was a boom box, and dancing all over, even putting his head down on the floor and lifting up his hands.  It looked like he was trying to spin on his head like a break dancer!  Of course, since his mom and I clapped every time, he did it over and over again.  After his mom left for work, we went on a long walk with his trike.  We were both worn out by the time we got home.

On Saturday, I weeded out a large part of my overgrown flower bed on the north side of the house, pruned some of the poor roses that didn't get pruned earlier, and went through a plastic bin of gardening supplies in the garage.  Then I folded a ton of laundry and went grocery shopping for Father's Day.  I filled up my gas tank, since I had a 30 cents a gallon off through Safeway that was only good until midnight.  I came home to cook enough meals to last us all week.  Ran the dishwasher a couple of times.  Watched the Mariner's game on TV and went to bed.

Today we went to church, babysat in the toddler's room, went grocery shopping again for the stuff I forgot Saturday, came home and made a beef stroganoff for dinner and a strawberry/rhubarb pie for dessert (my husband's request) for my husband, my daughter, and her guys.  Did some picking up and dusting before everyone got here.  Sorted out a cupboard of plastic water bottles to send to the Goodwill (it's amazing how they all collect).  Listened to the Mariner's game on the radio and wished my mom was here to see how well they're doing this year.  She loved listening to the Mariner's games.

Now it's time to get to bed.  A new busy week ahead of me.

A Single Thread

If you've ever looked at my book lists for the years, you can tell that I read alot and I read quite a variety of books.  I have to say though that I am partial to books that include my hobbies, as in the Blossom Street books that center around a knitting store.  So I was happy to discover a new author to me, Marie Bostwick, who writes a series of books centering around a quilt store.  The first book in the quilt store series is A Single Thread.  It details how the main character comes to own a quilt store.  Along the way she also faces some health challenges.  And there is lots of drama with the secondary characters.  I really liked this book.  At one point I realized I was crying along with one of the characters.  I can tell you that I NEVER do that!  :)

Because I'm checking these out from the library, I didn't have the second one to read, so I skipped to the third.  It's proving very interesting also.  If you would like to read some good, clean novels in the vein of the Blossom Street books, give these a try.

Once-A-Month Cooking

In my pre-working days, when money was really tight on a one-income budget, I often did my version of once-a-month cooking.  After trying the actual 30-day plan a couple of times, I adapted it to my own version, which was a lot more doable for me.

Basically, I try to make one freezer meal every week.  One night's dinner is made in triplicate, leaving us one to eat and two to freeze.  I find this is much more manageable than trying to make 30 meals all at once.  I generally use an 8-inch by 8-inch square pan to freeze things in, and I line the pan with a freezer bag.  So my general method of making freezer cassaroles is to put the meal in a gallon freezer bag, lay it in the square pan, and after pressing as much air out of the bag as possible, seal it.  The nice thing about this method is that after freezing I can reuse the square pans for the next week's meals, and the frozen meals stack nicely in the freezer.

To use, I remove the frozen meal from the freezer, cut off the freezer bag and plop the frozen meal into a square pyrex pan and cover with plastic wrap.  Then I put it into the refrigerator to thaw.  When I get home from work, I remove the plastic wrap and put into the microwave or oven, depending on what it is and how long it needs to heat.  In about an hour, dinner is ready and I didn't have to do anything except maybe make a salad.  If I remind my husband, he will even throw it into the oven in time to have it done when I get home or, during the legislative session, has dinner already made and just needing heating so I don't have to worry about him.  It is a great system.  When my daughter lived at home, we'd have one meal per dinner and someone would have the leftovers.  Now, each pan gives us 2-3 meals that we alternate with other meals.  It saves me so much time cooking during the week.

I have used both of the books shown here.  I think Once a Month Cooking is my favorite, but since my daughter borrowed it a while back, I used Frozen Assets for this week's dinners and I'm going to send a couple home with Elsie tomorrow to taste test.

Today I started out with five pounds of ground beef that was on sale.  I browned all of it, drained it, and then added two cups of chopped onion and two cups of chopped celery, some seasonings and garlic, and a chopped green pepper and cooked them all together.  That is the basic meat mixture.

I removed four cups of the cooked meat mixture and added two cans of tomato soup, brown sugar, and prepared mustard and simmered it all together for 10 minutes.  I cooled this and divided it into two freezer containers.  So Elsie and I will both be able to have Sloppy Joes this week or she can freeze it if she prefers.

I measured out four more cups of the mixture and added canned tomatoes, kidney beans, and seasoning and - it's chili!  It has to simmer for an hour and then I'll divide it into two containers.  Chili for another meal this week.

The last four cups of meat mixture will be made into three meals of a shepard's pie with vegetables added and mashed potatoes on the top.  These will go into the freezer for later use.  My five pounds of ground beef has been stretched into seven meals.  Some of these meals will actually feed us more than once, so this is a pretty economical way to cook and a real timesaver for me.

Sorting Out

My mom passed away a year ago and we are still sorting through the things in her house.  Up until now, I have hated going over there by myself, so I always wait until I can get my daughter to go with, even if just for morale support.  But this week, because of her husband starting his new job and her work schedule, it was going to be impossible for her to go with me.  Now in the past, I'd just skip going this week.  But there is just too much to be done to do that.  I came home from work, ate dinner, and took the plunge to go over and look through things I'd looked through at the very beginning...when sorting was pretty overwhelming.  I figured I'd just be there for a couple hours before it got dark.  I found some treasures!

Last summer we had a couple garage sales and we sold lots of record albums.  I didn't think about the fact until recently that there was a record that the Red Cross made of me and my mom talking to my dad, who was stationed overseas.  It was for Christmas 1957.  We made the record and sent it to him, but they didn't have a record player over there and he couldn't listen to it until he came home.  Anyways when I remembered that record, I was afraid it had been sold or donated to the Goodwill with the leftover albums from last summer.  Imagine my surprise to find a stack of these:  Victor Talking Machine Orthophonic Recordings....with my own little record in the middle of the stack.  Also, I found several records that my mother and her uncle and my mother and her sister made.  What a wonderful find.  Now if I can find a record player!

Then there quite a few pairs of leather gloves.  I think my mom purchased them to make doll shoes.  If there are pairs, I might try to sell them on Etsy.

Look at this poor doll in her box of simple garments.  She was so homely I had to bring her home.  She needs some love.  :)

The next thing I found that was interesting was a bunch of letters my dad wrote to my mom while he was stationed in Korea in the late 1940's, although one is written to her before they got married.  They got engaged after dating for six weeks and she went home to Minnesota to plan the wedding.  Her family was convinced he wouldn't show up.  Some interesting reading, with promises of eternal love and faithfulness, although mostly he seemed to want hair oil and shampoo.  :)

There are quite a few little bisque dolls.  I would like to dress a few and make shadowboxes for my nieces to remember Grandma by.

All-in-all, it wasn't too bad.  Next time it won't be quite as hard if I have to go there by myself.
