Seasons of Life
A blogging friend is having a silent auction to help cover the costs of her friend's adopting a child from Haiti. Go here! I wanted to be supportive and send her something for it and planned on knitting or sewing something, but it seems that time has just evaporated lately!
About 10-15 years ago I was really into decorative painting. I mean, I was really in love with doing it! I was introduced to it by a new friend at the time and discovered I really had a talent for it. I painted my heart out and sold my items at various bazaars and sales around the area for a number of years. Then my painting friend dumped me, I went back to working outside the home, and my painting time dried up. I attempt something once in a while, but haven't really finished much in the past 10 years other than gifts for co-workers - some potpourri boxes or Christmas ornaments. I've had a canister set for my daughter sitting on my craft table for five years now. It has to get done in the next couple months. I promise! :)

Anyways, since I was running out of time to make anything new, I dug into some boxes I had of old inventory and found I had a lot more in there than I thought. I picked out a few pieces to send to the auction, and photographed the rest for my daughter to put in her Etsy shop. Just looking at everything made my heart beat a little faster! So check out our Etsy shop. Maybe if something sells, I'll try working on a few new projects. It may be that painting is cycling back into my life. :)

Thanksgiving Eve
I just love Thanksgiving. I've been preparing Thanksgiving at my house for over 20 years so I have it down to a science. Some years we have a large group, maybe 20 people. This year we have only four. We always have exactly the same menu every year and I'm not allowed to deviate much from it. Last year I added oranges to the cranberries and caught a lot of flack. We are very traditional. First, we always have a turkey. The past several years I've purchased a fresh one and it makes such a difference not having to worry about if the turkey is thawed. Plus, I think it tastes better. This year my daughter, Elsie, won a $15 coupon towards a Butterball turkey. Along with another store coupon, this covered half the cost. Woohoo! as my grandson would say.
We always have cornbread stuffing. I make a pan of cornbread and roughly cube it. Then I toast a loaf of bread in the oven and cube it. This is the basis of our stuffing. I think my husband would like some other kind one year, but my Dad liked cornbread stuffing since he was born in the South, and that's what my mother always made and so do I. I really miss my mom on stuffing prep day. She was very particular about the stuffing and would come over the day before and bake the cornbread, toast the bread and cut up all the onions and celery. For many years she would also come over early on Thanksgiving day, make the stuffing up and stuff the turkey, put it in the oven, and then go home after giving me exacting instructions on basting. I finally got to the point she would let me assemble it Thanksgiving morning, but she still came over the day before to prep everything.
While she worked on the stuffing, I made the pies. We always have pumpkin and apple. Some years if a lot of people are coming, we'll have a third choice. Maybe a sour cream raisin or a lemon pie. We always do the crust from scratch. It just tastes so much better.
Along with our turkey we have mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes or squash, fruit salad, rolls, and cranberries. We always make everything from scratch. My son-in-law had never heard of people making their own cranberry sauce. He thought cranberries came in a can. Tomorrow we'll probably have some vegies, but usually I skip them. No one eats them with all the other good stuff.
Elsie and her husband and my grandson are coming for breakfast since they are going to the in-laws for dinner. I'm making pumpkin cinnamon rolls and breakfast cassarole. I hope everything turns out well.
Happy Thanksgiving!

The Little Guy
There is nothing I love more than watching the Little Guy. He was able to come visit Grandma and Bapa on Saturday and stay the night. He is just so much fun. Every time he comes he has more language and says the funniest things. I tickle him just to hear him squeal, "You got me!" and I love hearing his, "Oh, no, what happened?" usually after something has come apart.
He is a picky little eater but he loved Grandma's Mexican cassarole, which is spicy, go figure. You never know what he's going to eat from time to time. He ate enough chunks of tomato out of the salad to equal a whole tomato. For dessert, he knows he can mooch most of the ice cream from Grandma's bowl. For some reason, we never give him his own bowl. But then he loves mooching. :)
My sister-in-law sent over a Tonka truck she picked up at a garage sale. It was love at first sight. "A BIG fruck!" Notice the pronounciation of the word truck. It has improved since he now adds an "r" into it. :) He spent the evening playing with all Grandma's and Bapa's trucks. The coffee table he labeled the fruck table. The big truck parked in the bathroom during bathtime and parked next to the Pack N' Play at bedtime. He really enjoyed it.
I wasn't sure how he would take to still sleeping in the Pack N' Play, since at home he's moved into a toddler bed. I don't have bed guards yet on the twin bed in the guest room so don't want him sleeping in it. Also, it's pretty high up off the floor, so it would be a long way to fall if he did fall out of bed. He went to sleep as usual. Apparently it's what he expects at Grandma's house. I did give him a pillow though since he now sleeps with one at home.
All-in-all, a very enjoyable time with our Little Guy.

Four Funerals and a Wedding
Tomorrow is a day off. I had planned to spend it attending the wedding of one of my husband's co-workers, but instead will find myself going to the funeral of a dear friend. She was a co-worker who retired about a year and half ago. She was a wonderful artist and had retirement plans of travel, teaching, and exploring her craft. She had one summer of travel, only to discover she had a brain tumor the size of an orange in her head last fall. She valiantly fought the good fight, only there really wasn't much hope of winning. The doctors don't really have a drug that can kill off a glioblastoma. The most they can do is buy you enough time to get your affairs in order. In Barb's case, she was able to attend her son's wedding. She died earlier this week surrounded by family. It really isn't fair. She had so much more she wanted to do.
My life this past 18 months has been so filled with loss. First, my mother. We had our moments, but I miss her so much! I still can't believe she is gone. Six months later, my best friend's husband's heart just stopped and he was gone. He was only 57. Then my mother's best friend, Carla, passed away about six weeks ago unexpectedly. It was like losing my mother all over again. And now, Barb. It is almost beyond fathoming. It makes me very grateful for the people I have in my life and appreciate that I can't take any of them for granted. I am also so grateful for my little guy. He was unplanned but so wanted, and I don't know how I could have made it through my mother's ordeal without him. God knew we were going to need him and sent him at just the right time.
So tomorrow my husband and I attend two events. One the beginning of life for a young couple. The other, the end of the journey for a friend.

Blog Numbers
I'm really not a very dedicated blogger, but I find it interesting to watch how many followers I have. The number for the past year has been around 39. It goes up a couple and then down a couple, but usually gravitates back to 39. My daughter tells me this is because I don't have giveaways of my own or enter other people's giveaways. Of course, this is the person who has well over 600 followers and enters all kinds of contests. I have nothing going that lets other people find me. So, I'm kind of curious about the followers I have. How did you find me and why do you stay? Hopefully, because you like hearing whatever it is I have to share, sporadic as it may be. :)
