April Accomplishments

Even though I haven't been blogging much, I have been being productive in other ways.  I've been knitting up a storm, and have a pile of baby washcloths to show for it.

Also, I reknit the burnt parts on the Little Guy's deer sweater, so it's now wearable.  It just needs buttons....and no, I'm not blocking it again!

I sewed myself a new nightgown out of some flannel my mother had given me.  It still needs buttons, but that has to wait until I decide on a new sewing machine.  It's all wrinkly from the wash, but nice and warm to wear.

I finally finished up a pillowcase dress out of one from my mom's linen stash.  I wanted to get some done in time for Easter, but just couldn't do it.  This uses a vintage pillowcase, bias edging and ribbon from my mom's house.  I think it turned out really cute.  It'll be for sale in Elsie's Etsy Store, along with a bunch of new aprons.

Checking In

I was surprised to see how long it's been since I posted anything. Wow! I guess I've just really been busy. I did a lot of babysitting this past week (Grandma's favorite thing to do) and I wasn't home in the evenings much so I couldn't transfer off pictures. The legislative session is winding down, although it looks like we may have 30 more days of it. Not happy! I actually got out and worked a little in my flower borders and I've washed a ton of laundry, although I haven't been home to fold it. So hopefully I can get caught up a little this week. Here are some pictures of the past week.  The Little Guy's favorite things are still Thomas the Tank Engine, Olivia, and his cars and trucks.  It's just so much fun watching him play with them.
Just chilling at Grandma's.

Watching Thomas the Tank Engine with Olivia.

Just looking cute.

Smile!

Decisions, Decisions!

I already posted about breaking my 25-year-old Singer sewing machine.  It is still sitting in the family room, waiting to see if I'll take it to the repair shop.  Meanwhile, I am still debating about purchasing a new machine and, if so, which one?

Originally I saw a Singer 7470 Confidence machine that I thought I'd buy.  But after doing a lot of review reading, I'm not quite sure.  Many people don't seem to like the quality of the new Singer machines.  The reviews are mostly good, but there are some troubling ones out there.  Of course, you never know the abilities of the people using the machine and how much of the problems are from operator error.

Then I came across a similar sounding and priced machine, a Brother PC-210 PRW.  It doesn't seem to have quite as many stitches, but seems to have everything I want.  The Singer has a free arm, a one-step buttonhole attachment, some monogramming (although people say the letters are quite small) and a hand look quilting stitch.  I can't find that the Brother does all that, although the specs say it has quilting stitches and comes with a monogramming foot.  It has a free arm, and a one-step buttonhole, needle threader, etc.  Otherwise they seem comparable and the reviews say it is Consumer Reports recommended and everyone's review loves it.  Oh, the torture of it all!  :)

Seriously, if anyone has input, I'd appreciate it.

Audio Books

My husband bought me an MP3 player for Christmas 2009 and it has been my best friend ever since.  I never listen to music on it, but it is so handy for listening to books.  I download books from our local library so I don't even have to buy books for it.  I find it's great when sewing, cleaning, and especially knitting!  I put in the earphones and tuck it in my pocket and away I go.  It's also great when you go for a walk and helps the time go by fast.  I think it is one of the best presents my husband ever bought me!  Right now I'm listening to the The Children's Book.

Life Cycles

With 50 years of living behind me, I find it interesting how your interests change over the years.  When I was a child, books and dolls were my primary interests.  My mother taught me to knit scarves and I had a spool knitter which I used to make yards and yards of cord.  Gradually I started sewing little dresses for my dolls.  I learned to cross-stitch and embroider.

When I was 10, my mother showed me how to use her little Singer featherweight sewing machine.  The garments I made for my dolls became more refined.  I learned to crochet doilies using fine hooks and thread.  I learned to needlepoint.  I began making miniature items, and making my own dolls.  I started studying old dolls and trying to recreate their garments.

Entering my teens, I started sewing my own clothes.  I acquired reproductions of old china head dolls and dressed them.  I developed an interest in Japan and created a Japanese doll house and dolls using ideas from the Rumer Godden book, Miss Happiness and Miss Flower.  By this time my needlework skills were pretty advanced, and I could sew just about anything I wanted.  My interest in old dolls was increasing.

For graduation, I received a large bisque-headed German doll.  This was my first introduction to actually owning a genuine antique.  She needed a lot of tender loving care, but sparked the collector in me.  Over the next few years, I acquired a small collection of antique dolls and studied the appropriate clothing for them.  I learned how to make my own porcelain dolls using purchased molds, bought a kiln, and made a small business of making and dressing small dolls.

In my 20s, I became a mom and sewed most of my own and my daughter's clothes, with a little bit of knitting sweaters, hats, and mittens for her on the side.  I designed and sewed costumes for our local ballet company and studied the construction of tutus.  My focus on dolls shifted from all kinds of antique dolls to French fashion dolls, specifically from about the 1850s to 1890s, and small all-bisque dolls.  I purchased a couple of reproduction French fashions and started a lifetime project of creating wardrobes for them.  I discovered Tasha Tudor and A is for Annabelle.  I purchased a doll I could use for my Annabelle and added her wardrobe to the lifetime project list.  These interests continued unabated through the next decade.  Somewhere along the way I added in quilting.

Entering my 40s, I added decorative painting to my crafting interests and, for a while, the painting overshadowed the sewing and everything else.  Then, coinciding with a return to working full-time, came an all-encompassing passion in knitting socks.  I became reinterested in my dolls, and started sewing new garments for the French fashions and Annabelle.

Now in my mid-50s, I have a multitude of wonderful hobbies to choose from at any given time.  I sew, knit, paint, quilt, cross-stitch and am dressing my dolls.  I've researched  and sewed the modern diapers for my little grandson.  I'm not sure I'll ever go back to making porcelain dolls.  The molds sit in a box under my bed and the kiln is in the garage.  I'm not sure I'll ever crochet the fine thread doilies again.  But I love knitting sweaters and socks and mittens, dressing my dolls, doing the odd painting project, counted cross-stitch, and both hand and machine sewing.  I'd like to work on my drawing if I get time or keep a nature journal.  The best part of all my hobbies is that I've managed to pass on the doing of them to my daughter and I am continually amazed at how her creative life is developing.  It is all just so much fun.

Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon

“These books have to be word-of-mouth books because they're too weird to describe to anybody.”—Jackie Cantor, Diana Gabaldon's first editor.

I wrote about these books a couple weeks ago.  For the past several months these books have been my companions.  I have now finished all of them.  I am sad.  The next one isn't going to be published until next year some time, if I'm lucky.  I guess I might have to get some of my other reading done now.  Although, the author has another series also; kind of a take-off of some of the Outlander characters.  Guess I might have to check it out.

I just checked out the author's website.  She actually has a list of books to help you get over the withdrawal of finishing her books.  I'm going to try A.S. Byatt's "The Children's Year."  We'll see.  :)

Shelton Old Time Fiddlers Fest

My husband and I went to the Old-Time Fiddler's Fest tonight with another couple. We went early, ate the fundraiser spaghetti dinner, and listened to the music. It was a very enjoyable evening.  The people watching was excellent.  There was a family sitting in front of us that all of a sudden got up and suddenly were on-stage playing their fiddles.  The youngest was 8.  They were so good.  We are going to remember this for next year.  We would definitely go again.
